Team GB Cyclists Implementing Saliva Analysis for Concussion Testing in Paris
Team GB cyclists participating in the Paris Olympics will be involved in trials to test for potential concussions using saliva analysis, BBC reported. The objective is to identify biomarkers in the saliva that can indicate whether a cyclist has suffered a concussion due to a crash and help in facilitating their safe return to cycling. This type of testing has been explored in contact sports like rugby union, but it is the first time it is being introduced in cycling by British Cycling, the governing body for the sport in the UK.
Nigel Jones, the head of medical at British Cycling, highlighted the significance of this development. He explained that while concussions present different challenges compared to physical injuries, ensuring the riders' safety and confidence in returning to the bike is not always straightforward. Having a clear understanding of when it is safe for athletes to resume training and return to competition will greatly enhance both their safety and performance.
Before the cycling team headed to Paris, baseline saliva samples were collected from the riders. If any of them experience a crash, their diagnosis and recovery will be monitored by comparing biomarkers in subsequent saliva samples with the baseline measurements. This research project is a collaboration between British Cycling and Marker Diagnostics, a company specializing in biomarker analysis.
Dr. Jones, who previously served as the team doctor for the England men's rugby union team, emphasized that while cycling may present fewer concussions compared to other contact sports, the severity of these injuries is just as significant. Cyclists often experience crashes at high speeds, sometimes reaching up to 70kph. Although helmets can help reduce the risk of severe traumatic brain injuries, they do not necessarily mitigate the risk of concussion.
This novel approach to concussion testing in cycling aims to provide valuable insights and improve the safety and well-being of Team GB cyclists participating in the Paris Olympics. By utilizing biomarker analysis of saliva, medical professionals can make more informed decisions regarding the athletes' recovery and ensure they can safely return to their sport with confidence.
