Tennis Star Marketa Vondrousova Pulls Out of Paris Olympics 2024
Marketa Vondrousova, the current Olympic silver medalist in women's singles, has recently announced her unfortunate withdrawal from the Paris Olympics 2024, The Daily Guardian reported. The Czech Republic's renowned tennis player shared this decision with her followers on Instagram, expressing her disappointment due to a hand injury. Despite the setback, she remains committed to recovering in time for the upcoming US Open, set to commence on August 26.
In her statement, Vondrousova conveyed her regret: "I am very sorry, but due to health reasons, I will not be participating in this year's Olympic Games in Paris. I hoped until the last moment that it could go at least in doubles, but the hand problems do not let me go on the court. I'm concentrating now to be okay at the US Open. I will keep my fingers crossed for all Czech representatives in France from a distance. Hopefully soon on the court."
Previously, Vondrousova suffered a hip injury during her match against Anna Kalinskaya in the Ladies Open in Berlin, which hindered her preparation for the tournaments ahead. This injury also impacted her defense of the Wimbledon title, where she made history in 2023 as the first unseeded women's player to win in the Open Era. However, her return to Wimbledon this year resulted in a first-round defeat against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
Despite her withdrawal, Vondrousova's focus lies on her recovery process and a strong comeback at the approaching US Open. However, losing the chance to compete in the Paris Olympics, where Vondrousova would have partnered with Karolina Muchova in both the singles and doubles events, marks a notable absence for the Czech team. For singles, Katerina Siniakova has taken Vondrousova's place, while Linda Noskova is now set to compete in the doubles category.
Additionally, it is worth mentioning that Vondrousova's early exit at Wimbledon caused a drop in her WTA rankings from number six to 18 in the latest rankings release last week.
