USA Fires Coach Berhalter Following Copa America Exit
Gregg Berhalter, the head coach of the USA men's national team, has been sacked after their unsuccessful campaign in the Copa America group stage. The team's early elimination marked the first time a host nation has failed to progress beyond the group phase, following losses to Panama and Uruguay, SSP reported.
Expressing gratitude to Berhalter for his five years of dedication to the national team and US soccer, Matt Crocker, United States Soccer Federation sporting director, recognized his role in uniting a young squad and progressing the program. However, a decision to part ways with Berhalter has been made.
Now, the focus has shifted towards finding a replacement, with former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp being linked to the vacant position. According to Crocker, the search process for a new manager is already underway.
The USA's upcoming role as a co-host of the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico is worth noting, highlighting the significance of an efficient transition in coaching.
Berhalter, 50, had previous experience in charge of the national team, but his second stint has been cut short. In 2022, an investigation into his past conduct led to the termination of his first tenure. Berhalter had admitted to kicking his wife during their teenage years. However, US Soccer found no legal impediment to employing him.
During his initial spell, the USA enjoyed relative success, advancing to the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and securing victory in the Concacaf Nations League Gold Cup in 2021. Nevertheless, his second tenure as coach lasted only 14 games.
After their defeat against Uruguay, Berhalter expressed confidence in his abilities to lead the team to success in the 2026 World Cup.
