Google Removes Kaspersky Lab's Antivirus from Play Store Due to US Restrictions
Google has terminated Kaspersky Lab's developer account and removed its antivirus software from the Google Play Store, in compliance with US-imposed restrictions set to take effect on September 29. This action followed the sanctioning of Kaspersky by the US Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security in June, prompting Kaspersky to halt operations in the US and replace its software with UltraAV's antivirus.
Kaspersky claims Google’s decision is an "over-interpretation" of the restrictions, arguing the regulations do not forbid sales and distribution outside the US. Existing apps installed through Google Play will continue functioning but won't receive updates or be reinstallable.
Users noticed the app's absence on September 27, and Kaspersky confirmed the issue two days later. Google reported removing the applications in adherence to directives from the US Commerce Department's Bureau. Kaspersky continues to assert that its operations and services adhere to international regulations outside the United States.
