Tesla recalls 27,000 Cybertrucks due to a rearview camera issue
Tesla has initiated the fifth recall of its Cybertruck due to a rearview camera malfunction, affecting 27,000 vehicles produced between November 13, 2023, and September 14, 2024. The defect causes a delayed image display on the dashboard when reversing, sometimes up to 10 seconds, exceeding the U.S. federal safety regulation that mandates a maximum delay of 2 seconds. This issue not only poses a significant road hazard but also violates American safety laws. In response, Tesla is offering a free over-the-air software update to rectify the problem, while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises drivers to rely on shoulder checks and mirrors when reversing as a temporary measure.
Previous recalls for the Cybertruck involved various issues, including a problematic windshield wiper, accessory trim that could detach while driving, and a stuck accelerator pedal. A major software recall was also conducted earlier this year to address unreadable warning light letters across 2.2 million Tesla vehicles, including the Cybertruck. All these issues have been corrected via software updates.
Despite the recalls, Tesla reported a significant increase in global sales, delivering nearly 463,000 vehicles in the third quarter, marking a 6% rise from the previous year and a 4% improvement from the second quarter of the current year. Nonetheless, total sales for the year still lag behind those from the same period in 2023.
