A new Recorder app for recording audio will appear on Chromebooks
A new audio Recorder app is being launched with the ChromeOS 130 update for all Chromebooks in October 2024. according to 9to5Google. While some AI-enhanced functions are reserved for Chromebook Plus devices, essential features such as audio recording and speech-to-text will be accessible to all users. The app operates offline once a 100 MB model is downloaded. With an interface inspired by the Pixel Recorder and designed in the Material You style, users can record audio directly from their device, search through transcripts, adjust playback speeds, and export both audio and text files.
For users of Chromebook Plus, there is an additional feature: an AI recording summary, which involves downloading a larger 2GB model. This feature provides a summarized three-point content overview and suggests a suitable title for the recording.
Besides the Recorder app, the ChromeOS 130 update introduces new functionalities, including enhancements for video calls like studio-grade microphones and visual effects that involve lighting and brightness adjustments. The rollout of these updates is set to begin at the end of October.
