Google to Introduce Gemini AI to All Older Pixel Buds Models
Google is updating older Pixel Buds models with its advanced AI assistant, Gemini. This feature was initially highlighted in the new Pixel Buds Pro 2, as detailed in their reviews. However, current Pixel Buds users won't need to upgrade to enjoy Gemini's features, confirming Google's rollout through emails to existing owners, as reported by 9to5Google.
Once Gemini is set as the assistant on your Android phone, it can be accessed through your Pixel Buds by replacing Google Assistant. A significant shift includes the "Hey Google" command, which will now activate Gemini. This setting is incorporated into the Gemini app, eliminating the need for separate configurations on your phone. According to the updated Gemini support page, this update covers all existing models: the Pixel Buds, Pixel Buds Pro, Pixel Buds A-Series, and the latest Pixel Buds Pro 2.
Transition Details and Implications
Currently, Gemini isn’t available worldwide. Users in countries where it's rolled out can expect to use it, while those in other regions will continue accessing Google Assistant until the upgrade becomes available locally. Google's initiative to transition to Gemini from Google Assistant extends across its devices and apps. For instance, Gemini is the default assistant on the new Google Pixel 9 series.
This move to update older Pixel Buds isn't surprising. The primary processing for Gemini AI takes place on the smartphone, meaning older buds merely need to link correctly to the updated assistant. Notably, features that allowed Google Assistant to read incoming notifications on older Pixel Buds were recently removed, which will now be handled by Gemini using the updated "Hey Google" command.
Rollout Expectations and Feature Changes
Google’s email announcement didn't specify an exact timeline but implied that the transition would occur shortly. Integrated features might function differently with Gemini, such as requiring the paired phone to be unlocked for initial AI interactions. Post unlocking, personalized responses will continue even if the phone locks again. Users have the option to refine this by enabling the "Only require one unlock" setting in the Pixel Buds app.
Moreover, integration changes exist for the "Hey Google" command. Unlike before, there's no separate toggle for the Pixel Buds; it’s now connected to the phone’s settings. Disabling "Hey Google" detection on the phone will likewise deactivate the command on your Pixel Buds.
