How you can utilize your phone for better sleep

In this fast-paced digital era, getting a good night's rest can be a challenge. However, your smartphone can actually help you wind down and improve your sleep. While not a substitute for professional medical advice, modern smartphones come equipped with features designed to ease you into sleep mode and establish a healthy sleep routine. We provide a concise guide below to help you optimize your phone's capabilities for better sleep.

1. Set a Schedule

Maintaining a regular sleep schedule is crucial. Most smartphones offer options to set up a routine sleep schedule for the whole week, eliminating the need for constant reminders. On an iPhone, open the iOS Health app and navigate to the Sleep section to set consistent bedtimes and wake-up alarms. Android users can achieve this by accessing the Clock app and selecting the Bedtime icon. Samsung Galaxy phone owners can utilize the Modes and Routines feature in the Settings menu to establish a sleep schedule.

2. Minimize Distractions

Avoiding stimulation from your phone before bed is a key factor in improving sleep quality. iPhones provide a "wind down" feature in the Sleep settings of the Health app, where you can set reminders for relaxation and monitor phone usage in bed. Apple's Sleep Focus tool, accessible through the same settings, allows you to mute notifications, calls, and alerts based on your sleep schedule. Furthermore, adjusting additional settings like Display & Brightness controls, enabling Dark Mode, and activating Night Shift mode can enhance your overall bedtime experience.

For Android users, the Digital Wellbeing controls offer similar adjustments. Access the Settings menu, select Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls, and enable the Bedtime Mode to automatically enable Do Not Disturb settings. You can also customize Screen Options at Bedtime to suit your preferences, such as using grayscale, dimming the background, and activating dark mode. Samsung phone users can find similar settings labeled as "Sleep" in the Modes & Routines menu.

3. Fade Out

For a calming bedtime ambiance, use your smartphone to play soothing music or audio. Popular meditation and relaxation apps like Calm and Aura can facilitate a peaceful state of mind. Additionally, iPhones provide a convenient timer feature in the Clock app. Simply select Timers, choose Stop Playing under When Timer Ends, set the desired duration, and begin playing your preferred audio. On Android phones, you can find similar options on the Clock screen where you set your sleep schedule. YouTube Music Premium subscribers even have access to soothing background sounds.
