Adrien Brody Tosses Gum to Georgina Chapman Before Best Actor Win: Watch
Adrien Brody won the Best Actor award for his role as László Tóth in *The Brutalist*. At the 2025 Academy Awards, he surprisingly forgot to remove his gum before heading to the stage to accept the honor. His girlfriend, Georgina Chapman, was there to catch it as he tossed it to her from the stage.
On Sunday, March 2, Brody, aged 51, earned recognition for his performance, surpassing nominees Timothée Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes, and Sebastian Stan. When Cillian Murphy announced Brody as the winner, he appeared shocked and covered his face. He embraced Chapman before making his way to the stage amid loud applause.
Once on stage, an emotional Brody expressed his gratitude, stating, "Thank you, God. Thank you for this blessed life. I humbly begin by giving thanks for the tremendous outpouring of love I’ve felt from this world and from everyone who treats me with respect."
"I feel so fortunate," Brody continued. "Acting is a fragile profession. While it may seem glamorous, it has its challenges." He also recounted his 2003 win for *The Pianist* at just 29 years old.
"The privilege of coming back here has given me perspective. Your career can change at any moment, regardless of accomplishments," he shared. "What makes this night truly special is recognizing that reality and feeling grateful to continue doing work I love. Winning this award signifies a destination, which my character references in *The Brutalist*."
Brody expressed his hope to continue portraying meaningful roles for another 20 years and honored his fellow nominees. He acknowledged a long list of industry figures, as well as Chapman and her two children: son Dashiell, 13, and daughter India, 15, from her previous relationship with Harvey Weinstein.
Brody and Chapman started dating in 2019 and confirmed their relationship to *PEOPLE* in early 2020. As the music began, signaling his speech was ending, he commented, "You’re already counting me down." He requested additional time on stage and asked for the music to stop.
"Please, I’m wrapping up. I will be brief. It’s not my first rodeo," he said. "Thank you for your patience."
