Alec Baldwin Reflects on Divorce from Kim Basinger and Its Impact on Their Daughter

Alec Baldwin shared insights on his challenging divorce from Kim Basinger, PEOPLE reported. More than 20 years after their split, he discusses the fallout and its effects on their daughter, Ireland Baldwin.

In the March 2 episode of TLC's "The Baldwins," the 66-year-old actor described the difficulties of their 2002 separation. He noted how their protracted custody battle deeply affected Ireland, who is now 29.

Baldwin remarked, "My relationship with Ireland was negatively impacted by my divorce and the lengthy media scrutiny surrounding it." He recounted that their custody battle dragged on for seven years, emphasizing how tough the overall experience had been. "One of my most regrettable things about the whole situation was the impact it had on Ireland," he added.

During their nearly two-decade marriage, from 1993 to 2002, Baldwin and Basinger faced many challenges. Their daughter found herself in the spotlight after an angry voicemail Alec left surfaced publicly. This incident led to the temporary loss of his visitation rights and then a public apology.

After marrying Hilaria in 2012, Baldwin now has a large family, raising three daughters — Carmen Gabriela, María Lucía Victoria, and Ilaria Catalina Irena — and four sons — Rafael Thomas, Leonardo Ángel Charles, Romeo Alejandro David, and Eduardo "Edu" Pao Lucas.

Ireland maintains a good relationship with her father. Baldwin noted that while she is very caring toward her younger siblings, she also has a distinct identity within the family. "This is why I focus on Carmen," he explained, indicating how they share a special bond.

In a recent interview, Basinger addressed their current relationship. She expressed respect for Baldwin's journey and the family's well-being. "We have a very genuinely cordial, and loving relationship because of Ireland," Basinger stated.

Although they don’t frequently see each other now, Basinger acknowledged their mutual understanding. She called their divorce "heavy-duty," revealing that Ireland had faced a difficult period during their split.

Despite their differences, the former couple emphasizes co-parenting harmony. The relational struggles may have been significant, but successful co-parenting reflects their growth and commitment to Ireland.
