Amy Irving Reflects on Relationship with Steven Spielberg

Amy Irving discusses her romance with Steven Spielberg in a recent podcast. She shared old memories from their years together and their time as a couple, People reported. Irving and Spielberg were together for 14 years, which included a four-year marriage in the 1980s.
During her appearance on The Hollywood Reporter's "It Happened in Hollywood" podcast, Irving recalled their story. She and Spielberg reconnected during her filming of "The Far Pavilions" in India. This happened after their first break when Spielberg came to see her. "I think we were meant to make Max," she said about their son, Max Spielberg, who is now 39.

Irving humorously mentioned the duration of their relationship. "I don't know how long I was married to him, but, yeah, we were together for 14 years with three years off for good behavior," she joked. During their split, she briefly 'ran away' but eventually, they reconnected.
Irving recalled meeting Spielberg in 1976. At that time, she auditioned for the role of Princess Leia in "Star Wars," which ultimately went to Carrie Fisher, and she starred in "Carrie." Irving was initially considered for a role in Spielberg's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," but their relationship was the priority for her. "I guess real life meant more to me than my career," she reflected. This decision led to her moving out and leaving behind the role.
Years later, while filming "The Far Pavilions," Spielberg reached out. "He was looking for locations to film his next Indiana Jones movie," she noted. Their paths crossed again in India when Spielberg made a stop on his travels. "I remember I was on a palanquin... and there was Steven. The romance continued," she said.

Irving described her present relationship with Spielberg as familial. She stated that they remain involved in each other's lives, co-parenting their son after their separation. "I love Steven. He loves me," she shared warmly. They occasionally double date with Irving's husband, Ken Bowser, reflecting their strong bond.
Irving emphasized their ongoing communication. "We have a great son together, and we raised him together even though we weren't together," she said, highlighting their closeness despite past challenges. Their mutual respect and shared history remain essential aspects of their connection today.
