Andi Dorfman Explains Why Her Newborn Daughter Is ‘Fully Formula Fed’
Andi Dorfman recently took to social media to share insights regarding her newborn daughter Harper, noting her feeding choice of being "fully formula fed."
Dorfman, 37, welcomed her first child with husband Blaine Hart on December 20, 2024. On January 9, she addressed inquiries about her feeding method through a series of Instagram Stories. Many fans had reached out to ask if she was breastfeeding.
She stated, "First and foremost, my sister and I were both formula-fed babies. That was always part of my plan." She initially intended to use a breast pump to provide breast milk for Harper. This was meant to help her track how much milk the baby received.
However, her plans changed when Harper unexpectedly needed care in the NICU. There, she was fed formula, which influenced Dorfman's approach. "I tried to pump in the hospital, but my milk hadn’t come in yet," she shared. "Harper did really well on the formula, so we took a lot of it home. Once we got home, I still couldn't produce milk when I pumped."
Dorfman mentioned a significant complication: having to undergo surgery shortly after her baby’s birth. This, she noted, disrupted her pumping efforts. She returned to the hospital due to complications involving two hematomas, which are localized pools of blood that do not drain properly.
Despite her attempts to pump again, Dorfman struggled to produce milk. "I tried one or two more times but was unsuccessful," she said. Interestingly, she noted the lack of typical discomfort tied to this process: "I never experienced pain or engorgement, unlike what others mention when stopping pumping. It’s unclear if my supply never arrived or if I missed the opportunity."
As Harper approaches one month old, Dorfman expressed that her daughter is thriving. "I hope this story helps someone," she added. "There’s so much judgment surrounding breastfeeding and formula feeding. This is my journey. We’re sticking to it."
Dorfman garnered fame as a contestant on Juan Pablo Galavis’ season of The Bachelor in 2014, later becoming the Bachelorette. During her season, she got engaged to Josh Murray, but they broke up just months later.
