Andie MacDowell Discusses Piriformis Syndrome Diagnosis
Andie MacDowell recently discussed her piriformis syndrome diagnosis. The 66-year-old actress revealed her fears of needing a hip replacement during a January 23 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. She described experiencing "shooting pain down my leg," which prompted her concerns.
MacDowell explained how piriformis syndrome impacts the piriformis muscle. This condition can compress the sciatic nerve, leading to discomfort in the buttocks and legs. While speaking with Drew Barrymore, she recounted painful experiences while using her Peloton bike.
"I ended up with bad knees and a bad hip and... I thought I was literally falling apart," MacDowell shared via USA Today. "The good news is my pieces are fine. My knees are good except for aging. They’ve aged. I’m working out really hard now doing PT. I’m not falling apart."
In her conversation, MacDowell expressed relief about her hips’ condition. "Thank God my hips are fine. I have to work my tiny little bottom and my hips. I do it every day. And it doesn’t hurt anymore. It’s a miracle. It really is," she said.
MacDowell also reflected on her journey toward independence after her children left home. She felt a significant void, as they were very important to her. Her daughter, Margaret Qualley, urged her to embrace this new chapter. "Margaret was really telling me I was supposed to be having the time of my life, but I wasn’t," she explained.
The *Groundhog Day* star has now relocated from Hollywood to South Carolina. She noted, "I’m happier now than I have been in a long time. I’m having the time of my life now. It’s really good."
In December, her daughter Rainey welcomed her first baby with partner Anthony Watson. Rainey shared a heartfelt Instagram post announcing her child’s birth.
"12/10/24 at 2:21 am ✨ one week in the world," she wrote, accompanied by a photo of her newborn. Rainey had a surprise baby shower organized by Margaret, who expressed excitement for the occasion. "She threw me a surprise baby shower. I knew it was happening but not the details," Rainey added.
Rainey’s brother, Justin, who lives in Montana, also joined the celebration. "He came in for [the shower] and they’re both really, really excited," she said. "He’s got a 2-year-old already, but they’re both really excited for me."
