Angelica Huston Reflects on Reconnection with Ex Jack Nicholson

Angelica Huston shared that she recently reconnected with her ex-boyfriend, Jack Nicholson, during a critical moment. The actress recounted her experience in a Feb. 21 interview with The Guardian.

During a frightening emergency, Huston received a telephone call from Nicholson while she was evacuating due to a nearby wildfire. The fire occurred close to her Los Angeles home, placing her in a vulnerable situation. She recalled, "I was in a car with three dogs, two cats, and the housekeeper," adding that Nicholson checked in on her and offered support.

Huston emphasized their connection, stating, "That’s the bottom line with he and I—when the chips are down, he’s there." Fortunately, her home avoided damage during the Palisades Fire, which had destroyed over 6,500 structures starting January 7, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

"My house almost burned down. It came very, very close," Huston reflected. She mentioned that she has since relocated to another residence, a ranch.

Huston and Nicholson shared a 17-year relationship before they broke up in 1990. She described her feelings for him, noting, "I loved him." Huston recognized the complexity of their relationship and stated, "It didn't make me happy, but I knew what I was doing."

In her 2014 memoir Watch Me, Huston revealed that their relationship ended after Nicholson disclosed he had fathered a child with another woman. Two years after their split, Huston married sculptor Robert Graham, who passed away in 2008 after a lengthy illness.

Though Huston rarely discusses her romance with Nicholson, she has included reflections and stories in her memoirs. She recounted their first meeting in 1973, when he affectionately gave her several nicknames like "Fab" and "Mine."

One memorable date occurred at Hollywood Park race track. Huston recalled Nicholson wearing a "beautiful cream wool suit with an American flag in rhinestones pinned to his lapel." He provided her with $50 for betting, which she returned with winnings of $67.

Huston penned about their adventures, sharing, "The first time I saw Las Vegas was through the open window of a limousine with Jack." Their professional collaboration included films such as The Postman Always Rings Twice and Prizzi's Honor, the latter winning her an Oscar.

During the 1986 Academy Awards, Nicholson supported her as she was honored for Best Supporting Actress. Earlier, in 1976, Huston attended the ceremony where he won his first Oscar for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Post-breakup, they worked together again in Sean Penn's 1995 film The Crossing Guard, where she played Nicholson’s character's ex-wife. In 2013, they reunited at a celebration for Huston's memoir, A Story Lately Told.

In her memoir, Huston expressed the desire to keep Nicholson in her life, stating, "Jack's somebody that I want in my life. I wouldn't be happy not having him in my life."
