Anna Sawai Responds to Yoko Ono Role Rumors in Sam Mendes' Beatles Films

Anna Sawai, a rising star in Hollywood, has addressed rampant speculation regarding her potential role as Yoko Ono in the highly anticipated Beatles movies. Recently, she won the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her part in the epic drama "Shōgun." Despite the buzz, Sawai commented noncommittally on the rumors.
In her interview with Us Weekly and other media at the SAG Awards, the 32-year-old actress stated, "I think a rumor is just a rumor." She continued, "I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do. I'm reading a lot of scripts and having many meetings. I aim to ensure that whatever I choose is the right fit. It might take time for me to find the right projects, but I want to surprise everyone who is going to watch it."

Given the bold decision for Sawai to take on such an iconic role, it would indeed be a welcome surprise. She would join an impressive list of speculated talent for Sam Mendes' project. So far, casting remains unconfirmed. However, reports from Deadline suggest that additional roles will feature Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Harris Dickinson as John Lennon.
The film series, scheduled for a 2027 release, represents a significant moment as it marks the first opportunity for The Beatles—and Apple Corps Ltd—to have their life stories and music integrated into scripted films.
Sawai's recent SAG Award reflects her ongoing success in "Shōgun." She's also earned the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, a groundbreaking achievement for an actress of Asian descent. Additionally, she received the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Drama.
During her press interview, Sawai expressed conflicted feelings about her multitude of awards, noting her uncertainty about returning for season two. "I don’t think this is something that you really get used to," she remarked. "It’s just the love for the whole team that I have. Knowing that I may not celebrate with them like this again made me very emotional. This is really the final day for me representing Mariko…."
