Anthony Mackie Discusses How Chris Evans Shared Spoiler for Captain America: Brave New World
Anthony Mackie revealed that Chris Evans informed him he would take over his role as Captain America in the upcoming film, Captain America: Brave New World.
Mackie disclosed that Evans helped him embrace this new journey. He learned about his new role during a casual gathering at Evans’ house. "We were watching a game and chatting," Mackie shared with Fandango. "He asked, ‘Have you read the new script?’ to which I replied, ‘Nah.’"
Initially, Mackie, known for portraying Sam Wilson (Falcon), worried about his character's fate in the film following the events of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, where Evans' Steve Rogers transfers the Captain America shield to him. "Being Black, I thought, 'I’mma die, damn. They’re getting rid of me. I don’t even cause trouble; I just stand in the back,'" he joked.
However, that fear quickly transformed as Evans took him to his "man cave." "He pulled out the new script and went to the last ten pages," Mackie recounted. "He said, 'Read it!' I assumed I was being killed off, but I reached a scene where he hands me the shield. I asked, ‘So why did you give me the shield?’ and he replied, ‘Because you’re f--king Captain America.’"
Instead of feeling upset about Evans leaking the information, Mackie said he found value in the way he learned the news. "I couldn’t imagine finding out any other way," he added, recalling joyful moments filled with hugs and celebration. "It was hilarious."
With the release of Captain America: Brave New World approaching on February 13, Mackie is eager to showcase why he deserves to wear the iconic suit. Notably, he feels secure about his new role, thanks to Evans' unwavering support. "His excitement for me becoming Captain America assured me that he knew I could handle it," Mackie concluded.
