Armie Hammer Breaks Silence on Cannibalism Allegations: "A Wild Time in My Life"
Armie Hammer is revisiting the cannibalism allegations that derailed his Hollywood career. These events took place four years ago.
In early 2021, the "Call Me by Your Name" actor faced rape accusations from an ex-partner. Additionally, various unverified messages, showcasing vivid sexual fantasies, were linked to him. Hammer strongly denied these rape claims, asserting his sexual encounters were consensual. A police investigation into the allegations was closed in May 2023, leading to no charges against him.
During an episode of the "Your Mom’s House" podcast on January 1, hosted by Christina Pazsitzky and Tom Segura, Hammer described this period as a "wild time." He reflected, "COVID was going on, people were locked in their apartments, people were miserable." The actor emphasized that amidst global chaos, a scandal surrounding him provided a distraction. "The world seemed like it was falling apart. And then this salacious story comes around where this actor wants to murder and eat people, and all of a sudden everyone’s like, ‘Oh, this is so much more fun to focus on than the fact I can’t leave my living room,’" he shared.
Hammer recalled feeling overwhelmed by the sudden media frenzy. "I think in March of 2021 I was the fifth most-searched person on Google in the world. And all of it was negative." Adding to this sentiment, he remarked, "All of a sudden, you’re left standing there naked in front of the world with all of your proclivities or kinks being judged."
After rising to fame through roles in The Social Network and other hits, Hammer struggled with maintaining a clean image. At the time, he was married to Elizabeth Chambers, with whom he shares two children: Harper, 10, and Ford, 7. He suggested that his social media behavior reflected his inner conflict. "Somewhere deep down, subconsciously, I wanted to get caught. I so did not relate to the image of me that was out there in the public," he explained. Regarding his social media activity, he mentioned, "I was ‘liking’ rope bondage pictures on my Twitter. It was like I was dog-whistling to it, if you will."
Hammer addressed public perceptions of his direct messages, arguing they were taken out of context. He stated, "If anyone took anyone’s bedroom conversations, specifically if people were having a little bit of sexy time, and they took the shit that they said, even if it was completely vanilla, everyone’s going to go, ‘You guys are fucking disgusting.’"
He openly discussed his fantasies about rope bondage, stating, "I like the idea that you are so completely mine. I can do whatever you want, and you love it because you know you’re mine." Hammer further said that these conversations were often playful, especially when intoxicated. "It’s just fun to talk about … you’re texting, and you’re chuckling to yourself," he said. However, he reflected on how such messages are often misinterpreted: "Then it gets read in the court of public opinion and everyone goes, ‘You’re insane.’"
