Backup by BioLite and Its Versatile Use for Homes and Photo Studios
BioLite's Backup system represents an advanced emergency power solution designed for both home and off-grid applications such as photo studios. Relying on slim battery panels that conveniently fit behind appliances, the Backup system ensures they remain operational for extended periods during power outages. The core of this system consists of two robust 1.5kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4, or LFP) batteries, termed Backup Core and Backup Extend. When fully charged from a wall outlet, the Backup Core automatically switches to provide uninterrupted power during outages, functioning similar to uninterruptible power supply systems. This is prepared by SSP.
For users demanding more energy, up to five Backup Extend units can be integrated with a single Backup Core unit, boosting the total capacity to an impressive 9kWh without the need for professional installation. This configuration stands as a more budget-friendly and convenient alternative to traditional whole-home backup solutions that might involve expensive gas-powered generators or central battery systems like the Tesla Powerwall.
Specifically beneficial to photo studios in remote locations or those opting for off-grid living, BioLite's Backup provides reliable and easy-to-install power backup. The premier model, Backup Complete, which bundles the Backup Core with a single Extend, delivers up to 3kWh, sufficiently powering essential studio equipment through long outages. The cost-effective system also markets itself as accessible to eco-oriented photographers by incorporating a straightforward 30-minute self-installation process openly praised by BioLite's CEO, Jonathan Cedar.
The Backup Core totals $1,999, whereas the $2,999 Backup Complete, also qualifying for a 30% home energy tax credit, keeps appliances such as an 18-cubic-foot fridge running up to 60 hours. It also supports larger fridges up to 26 cubic feet for 30 hours, further allowing occasional use of lights or smaller devices.
BioLite also accommodates renewable energy enthusiasts by making the system re-chargeable via solar panels or traditional AC outlets, accompanied by a smart app for remote management, including monitoring energy use during activities. It rolls out to consumers through a September 18, 2024, Kickstarter launch with early bird discounts available.
In a nutshell, BioLite’s Backup system efficiently bridges the gap for households and specialists, turning power shortages into non-issues with ease and cost-effectiveness while promoting sustainability.
