Barry Keoghan Reflects on Parenthood and His Upbringing
Actor Barry Keoghan recently shared insights about his upbringing and parenthood. In a video for the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, the 32-year-old discussed his experiences growing up in the foster care system and becoming a father to his two-year-old son, Brando.
Keoghan admitted that parenthood brought a new understanding of his mother’s hardships. He reflected on U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy's comments about his mother’s death and his difficult childhood. "It does weigh heavily on me," Keoghan said. Having lived in 13 foster homes, he eventually found stability with his grandmother.
As a parent, Keoghan pondered the challenges his mother faced. He stated, "I realized that it was such hard work for her and my father." He acknowledged the importance of a supportive care system in their lives.
Advocacy for Children’s Social Care
During the discussion, Keoghan expressed a desire to collaborate with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office to improve children's social care services. "You can use your profile and platform to shine a light on things," he affirmed. Emphasizing his commitment, he said, "Anything to do with kids and care, I want to help."
Keoghan currently shares Brando with ex-girlfriend Alyson Sandro. He desires to raise awareness about children's issues, reflecting his own experiences.
Childhood Reflections and Loneliness
Having faced a tumultuous childhood, Keoghan often speaks about his late mother, Debbie. She struggled with addiction and passed away when he was just twelve. He opened up about feeling "a massive loneliness," despite his subsequent success. He noted, "When I’m isolated? Obviously, my mother." Even years later, he still cherishes her memory.
Keoghan explained that while Debbie wasn't very present in his life, her battles always left a significant mark on him. He believes his story is not unique to him, sharing, "Dublin 1 — it’s the heart, man. Every inner city has its battles."
Insights Into Fatherhood
In his role as a father, Keoghan occasionally shares glimpses of his life with Brando, born in August 2022. He addresses parenting challenges while maintaining his child’s privacy. He faced accusations of being a "deadbeat dad" after reducing the number of posts about Brando.
On The Louis Theroux Podcast, he clarified he is "not an absent father." His reduced posting doesn’t reflect disinterest, but rather a protective measure for his son. "The more in the public I’ve become, the less I’ve posted about my child," he explained.
"It sickens me," Keoghan remarked, referring to the negative narratives. He feels the need to safeguard Brando from public scrutiny, asserting, "I ain’t going to feed them more material." This commitment reflects his intention to keep his child away from undue media attention.
