Belinda Carlisle Shares Secrets to 40-Year Love Story with Husband Morgan Mason: 'Lucky We Found Each Other'
Belinda Carlisle, the former frontwoman of the Go-Go's, recently spoke with PEOPLE about her enduring love story with husband Morgan Mason. Celebrating nearly 40 years together, Carlisle expressed how fortunate they are to have met. The couple married in April 1986.
Their journey began at a party in 1984 when Carlisle moved in with Mason the next day. "We've been together ever since," she noted. Although both maintain their independence, they cherish spending time together. "It just works," she emphasized. If Mason wishes to play golf, it's perfectly fine. They respect each other's choices.
Carlisle enjoys traveling and undertakes "crazy trips once or twice a year." Mason may not always share that passion, so she invites her girlfriends to join instead. However, the couple is rarely apart. "We love being together and enjoy each other's company," she affirmed. Their connection from 40 years ago remains strong.
Carlisle attributes the secret of their long-lasting marriage to laughter. Fun moments are crucial in their relationship. Together, they have also parented their son, James Duke Mason, 32, who is openly gay. She believes in allowing her son to "be his own person."
Reflecting on James's journey, Carlisle shared, "My son came out when he was 14. Our welcoming attitude gave him the confidence to do that." As a survivor of childhood abuse, Carlisle aimed to break the cycle of negative experiences in her parenting.
Having faced challenges in her upbringing, she created a distinct environment for her family. "From that upbringing, I've always lived in my own world and pretended to be a singer," she reflected. "Children like that often build realistic fantasy worlds. I learned to create my own reality."
