Bill Murray Talks About His Pep Talk for SNL50 Writers: 'They Just Needed a Little Boost'

Bill Murray, the beloved SNL alum, is renowned for his humor and wit. Recently, he showcased a potential talent for motivational speaking. On March 12, he appeared on 'The Drew Barrymore Show' to discuss how he lifted spirits for SNL50: The Anniversary Special.

This special aired live from Manhattan’s Studio 8H on February 16, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live’s debut in 1975. As a veteran cast member and host, Murray recognized that the writers were under significant stress leading up to this momentous occasion.
"The writers’ room had a grim atmosphere. When I walked into the meeting, it was heavy," Murray reflected. Lorne Michaels was in attendance, sitting at his desk with writers scattered around the room, "and it felt very heavy."
Murray expressed excitement after witnessing some planning for SNL50. "I wanted to share how beautiful this production was going to be. Many people will watch and cherish it; I believed it would be an extraordinary success," he shared about his motivational conversation.

He noted that Tina Fey and other writers appreciated his words. "They just needed a little boost," he added, which was evident during the show. According to Murray, he spoke genuinely without any pretense, saying, "They certainly delivered."
Barrymore, who attended the special, reminisced about her attendance at the 25th anniversary in 2000. Her mission then was to convince Murray to participate in 'Charlie's Angels'. She fondly recalled, "You could only reach him through a payphone," like the character he portrayed, John Bosley, in that film.
Murray praised the SNL cast over the decades, acknowledging their continual talent. He pointed out, "Great people have come through SNL. Any week could have a spectacular sketch. The talent is real; they write amazing content even today."
