Boeing to Lay Off 10% of Workforce Over the Next Few Months, Which Is Roughly 17,000 Employees
Boeing announces plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 10%, equating to about 17,000 employees, as disclosed by CEO Kelly Ortberg in a memo to staff on Friday. These layoffs, set to transpire over the coming months, will affect executives, managers, and employees alike, with further specifics to be shared by leadership teams in the near future. This is prepared by SSP.
This decision follows a tough year for Boeing, marked by issues such as a mid-air incident involving the 737 Max in January and legal challenges stemming from previous crashes. Additionally, more than 30,000 factory workers have been on strike since mid-September due to unresolved labor disputes.
Ortberg emphasizes Boeing's continued focus on safety, quality, and serving customers, though admitting that the decisions are necessary to address the company's current financial strains and future recovery. Changes also include postponing the 777X airplane delivery to 2026 and the cessation of the 767 aircraft production after fulfilling existing orders.
Ortberg, previously with Rockwell Collins and who became Boeing's CEO in August, underscored the necessity of structural changes to uphold Boeing's competitiveness amidst substantial challenges.
Earlier, SSP reported that the world's first virtual dog leash has been unveiled.
