Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa’s Kids Acknowledged Fame Less
Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa ensured their children were largely unaware of their father's celebrity status as they grew up. In a conversation with The Times, Springsteen explained why their kids—Evan, Jessica, and Samuel—were initially not exposed to his fame. As children, hearing him on the radio would prompt them to say his name, distinctly identifying their dad as part of their world without fully knowing his rock star persona. Visits to concerts happened, but were typically cut short for video games, leaving their knowledge minimal.
As they matured, his children gradually took more interest in attending performances and bringing friends along. However, they chose independent paths, distancing themselves from the peculiarities of Springsteen's career. Off the stage, Springsteen embraced ordinary family roles, joking that his duties included being the early morning chauffeur for their children.
Springsteen and Scialfa, who married in 1991 after a long-standing friendship, share a history both in personal life and music. Her longstanding role in the E Street Band dates back to 1984 and preceded their romance by several years. Although Springsteen's musical achievements are significant—over 140 million albums sold worldwide and 20 Grammy Awards—his children never idolized his work, showing what he considered a healthy disinterest.
This indifference, to Springsteen, symbolized success in parenting. He expressed relief that his children avoided the complexities of fandom, noting that appreciating personal, non-celebrity lives is preferable.
Fans recently gained more insight into their life challenges, learning about Scialfa’s 2018 multiple myeloma diagnosis. This disclosure, featured in the documentary "Rock Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band" at the Toronto International Film Festival, highlighted her medical journey. Despite her condition’s intensity, Scialfa manages to join Springsteen on stage for short performances, a testament to her determination and connection with their audience.
