Cameron Diaz Open to Revisiting Her Iconic Role in "The Mask" Sequel
Cameron Diaz is considering a return to the role that catapulted her to fame. The actress, now 52, expressed her willingness to reprise Tina Carlyle in a sequel to "The Mask." However, this return hinges on the involvement of lead actor Jim Carrey. Diaz shared her thoughts with Access Hollywood, stating, "If Jim’s on board … I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one."
Jim Carrey, reflecting on "The Mask"'s 30-year legacy, discussed his interest in a sequel while promoting "Sonic the Hedgehog 3". The 63-year-old stated, "Oh gosh, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess." His focus is not primarily financial, as he said, "It’s not really about the money." Carrey expressed that while he occasionally contemplates retirement, a compelling project or familiar collaborators could sway him back into action.
Diaz's breakthrough came with the original "The Mask," where she performed as nightclub singer Tina, opposite Carrey’s Stanley Ipkis. Her supportive performance contributed to a narrative that featured a magical mask transforming Stanley into a playful, green-faced hero. After this success, Diaz headlined major films like "There’s Something About Mary," "My Best Friend’s Wedding," and "Charlie’s Angels," establishing herself as a leading figure in Hollywood during the '90s and early 2000s.
In 2014, Diaz stepped away from acting following her role in "Annie." Now, she is back in the spotlight alongside Jamie Foxx in Netflix's "Back In Action." At "The Graham Norton Show," Diaz reflected on her ten-year hiatus, declaring, "Oh my God, I loved it. It was the best 10 years of my life." She cherished her time focused on being a mother and wife, stating, "I’m a mom, I’m a wife, I’m living my life."
With her family, husband Benji Madden, and daughters Raddix, born in 2019, and Cardinal, born in 2024, Diaz noted, stepping back made sense. She also remarked on how, over time, "people stopped asking" her for new roles, describing that phase as "so lovely."
As the "Holiday" actress returns to acting, she emphasizes her gratitude for the craft. "It’s a privilege to do this," she said during her conversation with Graham Norton. She expressed that letting go of her aspirations would be foolish, remarking on the importance of engaging with work that brings joy to others. Diaz emphasized that participating in film-making allows her to share happiness through storytelling, whether viewers are in theaters or at home.
