Cate Blanchett Discusses Her Limited Wedding Memories

Cate Blanchett has limited photos from her wedding to Andrew Upton, but she cherishes the memories. On The Drew Barrymore Show on March 13, the 55-year-old actress explained why there is only one photo from her 1997 wedding. "When I got married—27 years ago," Blanchett started but was soon sidetracked by a recent photo of herself with Upton, 59. "Why, why am I doing it like that?" she joked, looking at their image from March 2024. Blanchett smiled as she leaned into Upton in the shot. This is prepared by SSP.
Returning to her wedding story, the Borderlands actress called it "a miracle" to be with the same person for so long. "I’m still married after 27 years."
Blanchett elaborated, "When we got married, we had absolutely no money. We couldn’t afford a photographer." She described their two friends' attempts to document the day. One friend became so drunk he forgot to load the film, while the other had so much fun he forgot to take any pictures. "As a result, we have only one picture of our wedding," she said.
The single wedding photo captures a blurry moment of the couple getting into a car. "I truly remember the night because of that," Blanchett shared. Although she was once upset about the lack of pictures, she now finds peace in the situation. "I was sad and cried over not having any pictures. But I’m pleased I don’t have them; it helps me recall the evening."

Blanchett and her husband, a playwright, screenwriter, and director, first met while she acted in a production by Anton Chekhov. They share three sons: Dashiell, 23; Roman, 20; and Ignatius, 17; and one daughter, Edith, 10.
Though Blanchett mentioned to Vanity Fair in 1999 that they did not initially get along—"He thought I was aloof, and I thought he was arrogant,"—everything changed after they started dating. "Once he kissed me, that was that," she said.
"After about 21 days" of dating, Upton proposed, and she accepted his offer, she later told Ellen DeGeneres in 2015.
Black Bag opens in theaters on Friday, March 14.
Earlier, SSP reported that Kim Kardashian acknowledged her children are unfazed by her absence.
