Cheryl Burke Discusses Her Celibacy Journey

Cheryl Burke is embracing her single and celibate lifestyle. During an appearance on the February 12 edition of iHeart Radio's I Do, Part 2 podcast, the 40-year-old professional dancer explained her choice following her divorce from Matthew Lawrence in February 2022.
Burke stated plainly, "I'm not dating and I'm choosing not to date." She confirmed that she hasn’t been on a date in over a year, replying, "Oh, for sure," when asked if it was more than 365 days. Despite finding men attractive, she emphasized, "That doesn't mean, though, that they deserve me."

The "Dancing with the Stars" alum redirected any interest in casual encounters. She described herself as a "sober woman" who values "respecting and loving myself." Burke previously shared in an August 2024 Instagram Reel that she embarked on her journey of celibacy three years ago.
Burke candidly discussed her past experiences with relationships. "The thing is, you have sex with me, I fall in love fast," she noted. "So like, this is not a good thing, right?" On the podcast, she mentioned striving for less intensity. She acknowledged, "I am such an intense woman... it is what it is, it's who I am."

Reflecting on her past mindset regarding sex, Burke revealed a newfound perspective. She expressed, "None of it is real." She explained how physical encounters only held meaning if she allowed them to happen, saying that past casual relationships chipped away at her soul.
Furthermore, Burke shared how childhood experiences of sexual abuse have impacted her ability to be "vulnerable enough" for true intimacy, a topic she has been addressing in therapy.
