Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey: Dexter Reunion After 33 Years
Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey have reunited on the new Dexter prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, more than 30 years after they originally worked together on Mobsters. The series, directed by Slater's Heathers' director, Michael Lehmann, has been nostalgic for Slater who reflected on his early career collaboration with Dempsey. In Mobsters, an early 1920s gangster film, Slater played Charlie "Lucky" Luciano, whereas Dempsey portrayed Meyer Lansky. Despite the tepid reception of Mobsters, Slater fondly appreciated reconnecting with Dempsey, stating that their professional relationship evolved into a genuine friendship. This is prepared by SSP.
Dexter: Original Sin, set in the 1990s, where Slater plays Miami Metro homicide detective Harry Morgan. His relationship with Dempsey's character, Captain Aaron Spencer, along with others such as Tanya Martin and Harry's daughter Debra, explores intriguing dynamics in this crime dramedy. Slater noted that reviving the atmosphere of the '90s spotlighted advancements in police technology, a comforting realization of society's progression.
PEOPLE interviews have revealed Slater and Dempsey’s delight at working together again. Dempsey lauded the embracing and creative environment created by Clyde Phillips, celebrating the collaboration that the ensemble cast enjoyed. Meanwhile, in the series, Dexter, a young crime investigator, grapples with his dark obsessions under Harry’s guidance, which highlights the complexities that made the original series captivating. Slater respected James Remar's previous portrayal of Harry but embraced the opportunity to bring his own interpretation.
Dexter: Original Sin’s cast and creative ensemble have been praised for their compelling portrayal of conflict and moral ambiguity while maintaining elements from the original series, endearing itself to fans as it streams on Paramount+ with Showtime.
