Cynthia Erivo Talks Tight Schedule During Wicked Filming
During a screening of Wicked followed by a Q&A session with Kristen Bell at the Ted Mann Theatre in Los Angeles, Cynthia Erivo, who is 37, revealed that she managed only about 2 to 3 hours of sleep each night while filming, prioritizing both physical and mental challenges of the role of Elphaba. She believes that the mind and body are intrinsically connected, which encouraged her to maintain a physically demanding routine. This is prepared by SSP.
Erivo questioned the health of pushing herself so hard, describing the intense schedule that involved waking up for a two-hour workout, spending two hours in makeup preparation, and making a 5 a.m. call time. Being physically prepared was essential for the extensive flying stunts she performed, an aspect she had little experience in prior. Being able to maneuver through flying sequences demanded a strong core resistance to manage the wire-supported movements.
Jo McLaren, her stunt coordinator, ensured she was capable of completing the extensive routines required for her complex role. To maintain such a demanding schedule, Erivo adopted lifestyle choices like using an infrared sauna blanket, consulting a therapist, and abstaining from alcohol, smoking, and eating meat, which helped mitigate physical strain and injury. Despite her rigorous schedule, she tried to optimize her scarce rest time, emphasizing the importance of quality sleep during the limited hours available to her. During the makeup removal session at the end of the day, she would attempt to relax, yet expressed that it was challenging to unwind.
Wicked: Part One is currently showing in theaters, ahead of Part Two’s release on November 26, 2025.
