Denzel Washington on His Identity Beyond Hollywood

Denzel Washington, currently starring in the Broadway revival of Shakespeare's Othello, expresses a preference for being identified as a theater actor rather than a film star. During an interview on CBS News` Sunday Morning, he reflected on this perspective while discussing his role alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.
Washington stated, "What’s the definition of a Hollywood actor? Myself, I’m from Mt. Vernon, so I’m a ‘Mt. Vernon actor.’ I don’t know what ‘Hollywood’ means." He questioned the notion of fame in Hollywood, indicating that the label means little to him.
In this interview, Washington noted, "I'm a stage actor who does film; it’s not the other way around." He emphasized his roots in theater where he first honed his craft before transitioning to film. He explained the different mediums, noting, "Movies are a filmmaker's medium... Theater is an actor's medium. The curtain goes up, nobody can help you."

The current 'Othello' production marks the first Broadway showing in over 40 years, with Washington playing the title role while Gyllenhaal takes on Iago. Washington expressed how fulfilling this role is for him and his aspirations to honor the legacy of James Earl Jones, a formative influence.
Washington mentioned, "James Earl Jones was my northern star when I was in college. He was who I wanted to be." He humorously added, "I know it wasn’t as good as my 22-year-old interpretation. But you know, it’s my turn." Reflecting on his youth, he shared insights, "I thought I knew everything then... Now I understand it's really about a bond between the characters."

Working with Gyllenhaal thrills Washington, who described this endeavor as "the most excited I’ve been this century." He emphasized the unique experience and excitement he feels about this production strategy, stating, "Seriously, I haven’t been this excited about anything I’ve done as I am about this."
The limited 15-week engagement of 'Othello' is directed by Tony Award-winning Kenny Leon. The production, produced by Brian Anthony Moreland and several co-producers, runs through June 8 at Broadway’s Barrymore Theatre.
