Derek Hough Supports Julianne After Her Dogs' Passing
Derek Hough provides crucial support to his sister, Julianne Hough, during her difficult times. The Dancing with the Stars judge recently shared how he rallied behind her following the sudden deaths of her two Cavalier King Charles spaniels in 2019.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Derek reflected on his support for Julianne. "In family situations, you rally together," he explained. When tragedy struck, the family came together to comfort her.
Julianne recalled in an emotional segment on The Jamie Kern Lima Show how Derek and other family members "flew out" to be with her after discovering that coyotes killed her dogs, Lexi and Harley. Derek emphasized that being there for family in tough times is essential. "Families are those who support you; it reveals how wonderful they are," he stated.
He recounted a conversation with a doctor who had been by many bedsides at crucial moments. According to him, patients do not request money or accolades. Instead, they ask for loved ones to be at their sides. "It's important to remember that family is vital," he said.
Derek, who shares four pets with his wife, Hayley Erbert, expressed that they regard their animals as family members. Losing a pet often feels like losing a loved one. "Anyone who truly loves a pet understands that bond," he pointed out. He stressed the importance of caring for pets as family.
Julianne has also spoken about the funerals for Lexi and Harley. One particularly significant moment occurred when traveling to cremate their dogs. "I played the music from Gladiator that played when he passed, and it felt so profound," Julianne shared, describing a moment of connection. "The sunlight poured in, and I could feel their spirits, which was beautiful."
In July, Julianne became a dog mom again when she welcomed a puppy named Sunny. She posted a heartfelt Instagram montage featuring their moments together. "Sunny has brought immense love into my life. I can't picture my life without you," she wrote.
She added a personal touch, stating, "Lexi and Harley would have loved you. They sent you to me when I was ready to open my heart."
