DJ Unk, "Walk It Out" and "2 Step" Rapper, Dies at 43
Atlanta rapper DJ Unk has passed away at the age of 43. His real name was Anthony Leonard Platt. He was celebrated as "a true ATL legend" by those who admired his music.
His wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, announced his death on Facebook on Friday, January 24, Variety reported. Details about the cause of death have not been disclosed. Long-Platt expressed her heartbreak, stating, "I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER."
In addition, Platt’s music label, Big Oomp Records, released a tribute detailing the profound loss. They stated, "It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend, Anthony Platt better known as ‘DJ Unk.’" This message also extended condolences to his family, friends, and numerous fans influenced by his work.
Photos accompanying the tribute included Platt performing on stage with enthusiasm and a smiling demeanor. Another photo showcased him with a custom chain featuring "Big Oomp Records."
The record label reflected on his significance by stating he was "not just a legendary DJ, rapper and producer, but a true cornerstone of our label." They added that the impact of his work would be cherished indefinitely.
Unk's music "left an indelible mark on the industry, inspiring artists, DJs, and fans alike for years to come." His commitment and creativity were noted to have "will never be forgotten."
DJ Unk's 2006 hit "2 Step" reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart. His famous track "Walk It Out" had contributions from artists Andre 3000 and Jim Jones on the remix. The track was also featured in the movie "Stomp the Yard." Recently, GloRilla sampled his 2006 song "Hold On Ho" for her single "Hollon."
In a 2010 interview with XXL, Platt discussed making life changes following a heart attack. He mentioned, "It comes from not exercising, from not eating right." He explained his busy lifestyle, stating he worked hard each day to provide for his family. Platt emphasized the toll of constant travel and stress on his health.
