Ed Harris Reflects on Losing His Home in L.A. Wildfires: 'The Past Is Gone in a Certain Way'

Actor Ed Harris spoke openly about recovering from a recent significant loss. He and his wife, actress Amy Madigan, both 74, lost their home in the destructive wildfires in Southern California earlier this year. The couple is currently coping with the aftermath of this life-changing event.
"I’ve experienced a lot with losing our house, so I’m taking time off work," Harris shared with PEOPLE regarding his next film, "My Dead Friend Zoe." In this film, he plays Dale, a withdrawn army veteran and grandfather. "We are not alone in this struggle. Together, we’re doing okay."

Harris emphasized the importance of embracing the present amid their challenges. "This situation teaches us about living day to day, confronting each moment because the past is gone," he explained. He continues, "You focus on each day like a new opportunity, handling what you need to."
Through this harrowing experience, one significant lesson Harris learned is the importance of leaning on loved ones for support. "Cherish your friends and accept their love and compassion," he said, reflecting on resilience during tough times.
Harris, reflecting on his current state, noted that being fully present and leaning on others was not always easy for him. His perspective shifted after meeting Madigan. "Initially, she said, ‘Ed, you need to talk to me about how you feel,’" he recalled. "I used to think, ‘Why explain? I’m here and commit to you.’"

He recognized Madigan’s influence in his growth, admitting, "She helped me see my responsibility to open up in our marriage and be available emotionally."
Ed Harris and Amy Madigan strengthen their nearly 42-year relationship through excellent communication. They enjoy working together, which enhances both their personal and professional lives. "We have great fun collaborating on creative projects," Harris noted. He mentioned the various plays they've participated in and their partnership on the film "Pollock."

"It fosters invaluable trust," he explained. "Since we know each other well, we can engage deeply with supportive dialogue about our work, enhancing our bond while pursuing shared passions."
