Elton John Discusses Vision Loss at London Musical Opening
Elton John recently opened up about his vision loss. The iconic musician, 77, spoke during the opening night of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical in London on December 1. According to the Daily Mail, John mentioned his struggle to see the stage, even though he provided the musical score for the production.
He addressed the audience, saying, "As some of you may know, I have had issues, and now I have lost my sight. I haven’t been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed it."
John’s husband, David Furnish, 62, assisted him offstage. The singer expressed appreciation for David’s support during his health challenges. "To my husband one more time, who’s been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews … it’s hard for me to see, but I love to hear it and it sounded good tonight. Thank you for coming," he stated to the crowd.
In November, John discussed the severity of his vision issues with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America. He revealed having lost sight in his right eye over the summer due to an infection in the South of France. "It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see, and my left eye’s not the greatest," he remarked.
Despite his struggles, John holds out hope for improvement. "I’m kind of stuck in the moment," he said, mentioning the uncertainty of his ability to record music. "I can’t see a lyric for starters. We’re taking an initiative to try and get it better, but at the moment, that’s really what we’re concentrating on."
In early September, he first discussed his eye problems through an Instagram statement. He explained that he had been dealing with a severe eye infection that limited his vision in one eye. "I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process, and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye," he shared.
John reflected on the summer spent recuperating at home. "I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far," he concluded, expressing gratitude for the support he has received throughout this time.
