Emilia Pérez’s Karla Sofía Gascón Responds to Oscars Controversy Regarding Fernanda Torres
Karla Sofía Gascón addressed claims of violating Oscars rules by criticizing nominee Fernanda Torres. Gascón clarified that Torres, star of I'm Still Here, "has been a wonderful ally."
Gascón, nominated for Emilia Pérez, responded to accusations amid their competition in the Best Actress category for the upcoming 2025 Oscars. She denied speaking negatively about Torres, stressing she hadn't broken Academy Awards policy.
Allegations surfaced after Gascón mentioned an online campaign aimed at undermining her before the March 2 ceremony. In a Spanish interview with Folha de S. Paulo, she stated, "I dislike social media teams trying to diminish our work, like me and my movie."
Gascón emphasized the importance of mutual support, saying, "You don’t need to tear down someone’s work to highlight another’s." On January 28, she asserted, "I have never, at any point, said anything bad about Fernanda Torres or her movie."
Under Oscars rules, any negative public commentary about a competing film is not permitted. The Academy outlines that any tactic singling out the competition by name is strictly forbidden.
Facing speculation on possible violations, Gascón clarified that her remarks were not aimed at Torres or her associates. "I am an enormous fan of Fernanda Torres," she stated on January 29 in a response to Variety. "I was referencing the toxic and violent hate speech I've encountered on social media."
She continued, "Fernanda has been a wonderful ally, and no one directly associated with her has shown anything but support." Gascón expressed her openness to the outcome of the awards.
"This isn’t a competition," she noted. "This is simply about people liking one's work or not."
