Eminem Expresses Appreciation as Ex-Employee Charged with Illegal Selling of Unreleased Music

Joseph Strange, a former employee of Eminem's studio, has been charged with illegally selling over 25 unreleased songs of the rapper online. The FBI's investigation revealed the music was available on platforms like Reddit and YouTube without the approval of Eminem or his label. Created between 1999 and 2018, the songs appeared on the internet as a criminal complaint stated that Strange was responsible for this significant breach of intellectual property rights. Having worked at Eminem’s studio in Ferndale, Michigan, from 2007 to 2021, Strange had access to the studio’s secure data, a position he allegedly exploited. This is prepared by SSP.
A representative for Eminem expressed gratitude towards the FBI Detroit bureau for unearthing the alleged crime, highlighting the severe impact on both the rapper’s legacy and the financial security of the many creative collaborators involved. According to Acting U.S. Attorney Julie Beck, protecting artistic content is vital in maintaining the exclusive rights and honoring the original work of creators. Should Strange be convicted of criminal copyright infringement, he risks up to five years in prison, and if charged with interstate transportation of stolen goods, he faces a maximum of 10 years.
The FBI's operation, led by special agents at the FBI Oakland County Resident Agency, involved tracking those who had unwittingly purchased songs, all of whom pointed towards Strange. In January, the FBI searched Strange's home, confiscating hard drives and other crucial evidence of his alleged illegal activities. Strange, meanwhile, maintains his innocence through his attorney, claiming the allegations remain unproven. Despite this, the efforts to rein in the breach have involved direct public appeals from Eminem and his business associate, Fred Nasser, as the case proceeds in the judicial system, overseen by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy Wyse and Alyse Wu. Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge, affirmed the pivotal role cooperation from Mathers Music Studio played in bringing Strange's supposed misconduct to light.
