Florence Pugh Recalls the Shock of Freezing Her Eggs at 27
Florence Pugh, the 28-year-old star of "We Live in Time," revealed her decision to freeze her eggs after discovering she had polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis. Both conditions can significantly affect fertility and may complicate future pregnancies.
"I felt a sudden urge to get everything checked. I'd been having strange dreams, as though my body was signaling something," Pugh shared with Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi, known as "Dr. A," on Dear Media’s SHE MD podcast. She initially questioned the necessity of an egg count, replying, "No, what do you mean? I’m so young. Why do I need an egg count?"
After performing the count, Dr. A diagnosed Pugh with both PCOS and endometriosis. She recommended that Pugh freeze her eggs promptly. "It was strange because my family has a strong history of childbirth. My mom had kids even in her forties, and my gran had kids throughout her life. Then, at 27, I learned I needed to freeze my eggs urgently. That realization was truly mind-boggling. I'm fortunate to have discovered this when I did, especially since I've wanted children since childhood."
Understanding PCOS and Endometriosis
PCOS is recognized as the leading cause of infertility in women. This genetic and hormonal disorder can lead to issues like irregular periods, acne, infertility, weight gain, and excessive hair growth. The PCOS Awareness Month website provides detailed information on these complications.
Endometriosis also presents fertility challenges. According to the Cleveland Clinic, this condition occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows inappropriately elsewhere in the body. Symptoms include pelvic pain, heavy periods, and fertility issues.
Pugh admitted that while she had heard of PCOS, she thought it wasn’t widespread. She believed that if someone had it, they would know and not have to worry about it. "Upon learning that I had it, I realized I needed to change my lifestyle and be proactive about my future," she stated. "For many young women, thinking about this in your 20s isn’t on the radar."
Though Pugh noted experiencing symptoms like "acne and unwanted hair," she initially dismissed them as typical. "I assumed it was simply part of being a woman and maybe stressed," she explained, adding that she also considered fluctuating weight a natural aspect of life.
Raising Awareness on Fertility Issues
Pugh emphasized the importance of discussing PCOS and related fertility concerns. "If you dream of being a mum one day, understanding these issues is crucial, similar to learning how to check for lumps in your breasts."
She believes that integrating this education into school curricula would greatly benefit young women. "It wouldn't be difficult to educate everyone in schools. This knowledge is vital and can ultimately influence a woman's ability to have children."
