Florence Pugh Says She’ll ‘Forever Be Empowered’ by Andrew Garfield Collaboration
Florence Pugh recently shared her reflections on creating the film We Live In Time with Andrew Garfield. The project inspired her, particularly due to its poignant love story that faces tragedy.
On October 20, Pugh, 28, expressed her appreciation for the experience on social media, highlighting her collaboration with the 41-year-old Garfield. She wrote, "Thank you Andrew. I’ll forever be empowered by what we created together and the performer you made me want to be each day." This statement underscored her affection for the film.
Pugh explained the rarity of playing Almut, her character and one of two leads in the movie. "I’ve been desperate for a role like this for a few years. A woman who is current and relatable and going through all of the conversations modern women have," Pugh noted. She added, "Performing Nick Payne’s script on John Crowley’s sets is one of the highlights of my career."
Accompanying her heartfelt message was a series of engaging images. The photos included a film promotional poster, Pugh with a shaved head, and cherished behind-the-scenes moments with Garfield.
Garfield also spoke on their deep commitment while working together. In an episode of the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, he shared how they went beyond the agreed choreography during an intimate scene. He recalled, "We do the first take of this very intimate, passionate sex scene. It’s a closed set." The actor described momentarily losing track of filming as they delved into their characters.
He recalled, "As it were, we went a little bit further. We never heard ‘cut’ and felt safe, thus letting the moment progress naturally." Garfield humorously noted that he only noticed the crew when he "telepathically" sensed filming shouldn't continue.
We Live In Time tells the story of Tobias, played by Garfield, and Pugh’s Almut, focusing on their decade-long love journey. A car accident brings them together, leading to challenges that include parenthood and a medical diagnosis.
Garfield emphasized the project’s significance during a September talk at the San Sebastian Film Festival. He commented, "I read the script and contemplated the meaning of life. Standing at the age of 39 and 40, it felt reflective of my experiences. This script arrived, connecting with that point in my life." He found universal truths within their story, showcasing its appeal.
