Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz has sadly passed away at the age of 37. The Orioles announced his death in a statement on January 7, PEOPLE reported.
"Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the passing of former Oriole Brian Matusz," the team stated. They described Matusz as a staple in their clubhouse from 2009 to 2016. The team emphasized that he was beloved throughout Birdland. His connection to fans was profound, and he was always seen with a smile.
The team conveyed their thoughts and prayers to Matusz's family and friends during this tragic period.
Roch Kubatko from Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) reported that Matusz died Tuesday morning. The cause of death has not yet been made public.
Brian Matusz was first drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 2005. However, Matusz chose to play baseball at the University of San Diego for three years before entering the MLB Draft.
His collegiate career included being a two-time finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, and he became the school’s all-time strikeout leader with 396 strikeouts. He also won the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year award in 2008.
In the 2008 MLB Draft, Matusz was the fourth overall pick and made his Major League Baseball debut in August 2009. Throughout his career, he pitched in 280 regular season games, starting 69 of them. Matusz appeared in two postseason teams for the Orioles in 2012 and 2014, with a total of seven postseason appearances. He finished his career with an overall ERA of 4.92.
Matusz was traded to the Atlanta Braves in May 2016 but was released shortly after. He signed with the Cubs, making one start for the team.
In 2017, Matusz played for the Arizona Diamondbacks' Triple-A team in Reno. He also made a start in the Mexican League before concluding his pro baseball journey with the Long Island Ducks in 2019.
