Fortnite Returns to Android Globally and iOS in the EU Amid Epic's Ongoing Conflict with Apple
Epic Games has announced the return of Fortnite and several other titles to Android globally. This launch is possible through a dedicated Epic Games Store, marking a significant moment after over four years of absence from Apple’s App Store and Google Play. For iPhone users, access to the Epic Games Store on mobile is currently restricted to those in the European Union.
At present, Epic's store and alternative third-party EU app stores, like AltStore PAL, are nearly the only avenues for playing Fortnite on mobile devices. In 2022, Epic offered a workaround to access Fortnite on iOS through the Safari browser for users with NVIDIA GeForce Now accounts. Many gamers find this browser game experience does not match the quality of a dedicated app.
The EU’s Digital Markets Act pressured Apple to allow Epic to introduce its store on iOS devices within the region. However, Epic has raised concerns about the 'confusing' installation process. The complexity is significantly influenced by Apple and Google policies.
Epic highlighted, "The overall process of installing the Epic Games Store on iOS and Android involves multiple steps, complicated device settings, and scare tactics introduced by Apple and Google." They are actively engaged in legal battles and discussions with regulators globally. The aim is to eliminate the competitive barriers that these tech giants enforce on both developers and consumers, promoting the establishment of a more user-friendly store.
Thierry Breton, the EU's markets commissioner, commended the inclusion of the Epic store for iOS gamers in Europe. Breton stated, "Yes, gamers, Europe means more freedom and choice!"
Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, added, "Fortnite has been freed on iOS in Europe. However, Apple continues to block Fortnite from a billion players across the globe, and the fight for free market competition continues."
