Gabrielle Union Discusses Dwyane Wade's Cancer Diagnosis and Its Impact on Their Family

Gabrielle Union recently opened up about her husband Dwyane Wade's cancer diagnosis. This battle posed significant challenges for Wade and their family, US Weekly reported.
Union, age 52, spoke during the February 26 broadcast of "Today With Jenna and Friends." "Receiving that diagnosis was traumatic for him, facing mortality in his early 40s," she stated. She emphasized questions that flood the mind, like, "Will I see my family? Who am I without my health?"
Wade, 43, disclosed on his podcast in January that he was diagnosed with a cancerous kidney tumor nearly two years ago. He had surgery in December 2023 that successfully removed most of one kidney.

Union highlighted the struggle of managing Wade's diagnosis and its impact on their family dynamics. "You don’t truly grasp the toll it takes on your marriage, family, and children," she reflected. Wade was initially hesitant to open up about his healing journey.
Wade has children Zaire, 22, and Zaya, 17, with ex-wife Siovaughn Funches, and a 10-year-old son, Xavier, with Aja Metoyer. He and Union share a daughter, Kaavia, age 6. After surgery, Wade’s father stayed by his side, a show of family support.
Union noted, "Wade's vulnerability during this healing process was essential. He needed us to embrace that part of him." She added that it required grace both in giving and receiving support.

On his podcast, Wade described the experience as likely the first time his children witnessed him feeling weak. He admitted, "That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt." issues.
In his battle, Wade expressed gratitude for family support. "I saw everybody show up for me," he said. "In that moment of weakness, I found strength through my family and friends."
"Now, I'm not waiting. I’m approaching life differently," Wade concluded.
