Gene Hackman’s Wife Betsy Was His Lifeline, Friend Says

Acting legend Gene Hackman owes his life in part to his devoted wife, Betsy Arakawa. A close friend of Hackman revealed that without her, he likely would have died "long ago." This insight came from Tom Allin, who had known Hackman for about 20 years, PEOPLE reported.
Allin shared with the New York Times that Hackman appeared content letting Betsy "run things" and care for him. He emphasized Betsy's protective nature, noting Hackman's own words that he might not have survived without her attentive care. She ensured that he maintained a healthy diet and proper lifestyle.
Betsy acted as a "gatekeeper" for Hackman, organizing golf outings and social gatherings for the couple. One touching memory highlighted Betsy’s thoughtful care during a birthday celebration. In January 2020, she mixed soda water with Hackman’s wine to ensure he stayed hydrated.

Sadly, Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa were found deceased at their Santa Fe home on February 26. Betsy, 65, passed away due to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare but serious condition. The New Mexico chief medical examiner, Heather Jarrell, confirmed that hantavirus is typically transmitted through contact with rodent excrement.
Hackman, 95, died from severe heart disease, high blood pressure, and advanced Alzheimer's. Reports suggest he might have been alone in their home for several days after Betsy's passing. The last connection on Hackman’s pacemaker was registered on February 17, which indicates he likely died soon after.
An emergency response was initiated when a pest control worker noticed no one answered the door. Upon investigation, officers discovered both bodies. Betsy was found in the bathroom, surrounded by remnants of her medication. Gene was located in a mudroom.

The couple's dog, Zinna, was found deceased nearby, while two other dogs survived. Gene Hackman and Betsy met when she worked at a gym in Los Angeles while pursuing her music career. They married shortly after moving to Santa Fe in 1991, sharing 34 years of marriage.
Hackman has long been celebrated as one of the greatest actors of his time, yet it was Betsy’s steadfast love and care that ensured he lived a longer life than many expected.
