Geomagnetic Storm Update Today, August 19
Geomagnetic storm activity achieved G2 (Moderate) intensity at 17:12 UTC (13:12 EST) on August 17, 2024. G3 (Strong) geomagnetic storm levels were also recorded at 17:46 UTC (13:46 EST) on the same date. Both events were due to effects from the CME related to the X-class solar flare released on August 14. This is prepared by SSP.
Incoming Auroras
Aurora enthusiasts may have an exciting opportunity, as a massive surge of charged particles is expected to impact Earth. This event follows a significant X-class solar flare, classified as the most potent solar outburst.
The CME is predicted to arrive on Earth between the night of August 17 and the early hours of August 19. The NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center reports that this collision will trigger a minor to moderate geomagnetic storm. Such storms can temporarily affect satellite functionalities, cause radio blackouts, and cause auroras to appear at lower altitudes.
While the timing and strength of the CME remain uncertain, NOAA suggests that auroras may become visible along the U.S.-Canada border starting Saturday night. Activity levels could rise into Sunday, contingent on the solar eruption's intensity.
