Hayley Williams Reflects on Total Request Live and Its Impact on Generation Y
Hayley Williams, the lead singer of Paramore, has reflected about Total Request Live (TRL) and its significance during the late '90s. For many millennials, TRL was a must-watch after school. "Total Request Live was a countdown show that relied on votes to decide the No. 1 music video in the country," Williams explains. She humorously adds, "Gosh, now talking about it literally sounds like I’m talking about the 1950s." This is prepared by SSP.
The show's unique format resulted in an eclectic selection of music. By voting, fans brought together a mix of genres, including hip-hop, bubblegum pop, alternative rock, and country. Reflecting on her musical influences, Williams admits, "There was a time that I probably wouldn’t have admitted to listening to NSYNC." Yet, she acknowledges its impact, stating, "I wouldn’t have learned five-part harmony or how to structure a vocal arrangement if I hadn’t grown up on pop music that had complex arrangements." She notes, "To this day, I look back on those memories and think, ‘That’s why I’m here.’ "
Aside from TRL, millennials also turned to MySpace for discovering new music. This social media platform played a crucial role in giving artists visibility and solidifying connections with fans. Williams asserts, "I remember MySpace days vividly. We tour all over the world now, and I know that wouldn’t happen without the community we built online." Paramore routinely shared photos and updated their profiles. "We would change our Top 8 to reflect what bands we were listening to or touring with at the time, and we answered every MySpace message that we could."
Earlier, SSP reported that Prince William made rare comments about Prince Henry in new documentary.
