Helen Mirren Critiques James Bond Films for ‘Profound Sexism’

In recent remarks, actress Helen Mirren criticized the James Bond franchise for its portrayal of women, US Weekly reported. She firmly holds that the franchise contains "profound sexism." Mirren, aged 79, has never appeared in a Bond film, partially due to her disapproval of the series.
"I was never a great ward of Bond," Mirren expressed in an interview with the Standard. While she admires actor Pierce Brosnan, calling him "fantastic," she emphasizes that the entire James Bond concept does not resonate with her. She stated, "I never liked James Bond. I never liked the way women were in James Bond."
Mirren believes women have made significant contributions in areas like the Secret Service. She pointed out their roles during the French Resistance as examples of bravery. "I would tell real stories about extraordinary women who’ve worked in that world," she asserted, advocating for a shift in narratives surrounding women's roles.

Currently, Mirren portrays a scheming mob wife in the series "MobLand," showcasing her versatility. In this show, Brosnan plays her husband, alongside Tom Hardy and Paddy Considine.
The future of the Bond franchise has become uncertain post-Amazon’s acquisition. Rumors suggest actors Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, and James Norton might take on the role. Producers Amy Pascal, known for "Spider-Man," and David Heyman of "Harry Potter" fame will oversee the next installment.
Brosnan, who played Bond from 1995 to 2002, recently shared his hope that Amazon respects the franchise's legacy. He stated, "I hope that [Amazon] handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination." Fellow Bond actor Timothy Dalton shared a sentiment of nostalgia, noting that the deal has left him feeling "kind of sad" about the future of this iconic story.
It has been four years since "No Time To Die" was released, featuring Craig's final performance as Bond.
