House With Dark History for Sale at $18 Million
A notable Hollywood property, rich in dramatic history, is currently available. The house belonged to actress Brittany Murphy, who tragically died there at 32 on December 20, 2009. Her husband, Simon Monjack, was also found dead on the premises five months later.
Since then, questions have arisen about their deaths. There are persistent theories linking their enigmatic lives and passing to the house itself. Speculation includes stories of paranormal experiences and suspicions about its potential role in their untimely ends.
Current Ownership and Resale History
The home has changed owners several times after Murphy and Monjack's deaths. The latest owners secured the property in 2020 and have now listed it again. Currently, the property is on the market through David Parnes of Carolwood Estates with an asking price of $17,995,000.
The listing emphasizes a comprehensive renovation since Murphy’s era. The graphical and physical makeover includes a newly redesigned exterior, an updated front entry, and revitalized interiors and outdoor spaces. Despite the modern enhancements, many people remember its troubled past.
Brittany Murphy's Time in the House
In 2003, Murphy moved into this home after buying it from Britney Spears for $3.85 million. Murphy lived there nearly six years alongside Monjack, whom she married in May 2007. On the morning of her death, her mother called 911 after Murphy collapsed due to flu-like symptoms.
First responders arrived and transported Murphy to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The cause was classified as untreated pneumonia, exacerbated by anemia and drug intoxication from various medications.
Monjack's mother suggested possible mold in the house caused health issues, claiming her son experienced hallucinations. However, this assertion was dismissed by the medical examiner's office soon after.
Britney Spears' Ghostly Encounter
Brittany Murphy wasn't alone in feeling something was amiss at the residence. Spears, who lived there while dating Justin Timberlake, reported a paranormal event, eventually leading her to leave.
According to Julianne Kaye, a former makeup artist for Spears, something occurred after a reiki healing session. Kaye recounted, "She swears that he opened some spirit portal... and bad spirits came in... attempting to push her down the stairs." Following this incident, Spears checked into the Casa Del Mar hotel, never returning to the house.
Conversely, Murphy never outright claimed to experience daemonic presences. However, during a January 2011 interview, Monjack disclosed her discomfort with the home. He noted she often requested to stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel instead. He remarked that Murphy saw the property as "unlucky."
Real Estate Challenges Faced by the Home
The home has struggled in the real estate market, having listed multiple times for sale and rent. Most recently, it was advertised at $75,000 per month. In the summer of 2024, it briefly appeared with a $19 million price tag, though that listing was soon removed.
The current asking price has been reduced by one million dollars. Despite the discount, the house remains on the market after almost three months, still searching for its next resident. As its history lingers, potential buyers may find both intrigue and skepticism concerning this remarkable property.
