Hugh Grant Reminisces about Richard Curtis at Governors Awards
Hugh Grant recently reflected on his collaboration with filmmaker Richard Curtis. The occasion was the 15th Governors Awards in Los Angeles on November 17, where Curtis received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
As Grant presented the award, he fondly recalled their time working together. "You might think Curtis, given his focus on love stories, would have a gentle style. You would be mistaken," Grant humorously stated.
He shared humorous notes he received, including, "Now do a funny one," and "Don't worry, we can cut around you." These moments highlighted their dynamic during film production.
Grant also recounted an amusing experience from his audition for "Four Weddings and a Funeral." "Everyone liked my audition except for Curtis," he revealed. The director, Mike Newell, favored him, as did the producers and money people. However, Curtis took an immediate dislike to Grant.
"It is this a------ who we are honored to honor tonight," he joked, adding humor to the appreciation. Curtis, alongside producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, received the award. Juliet Taylor and late Quincy Jones were also honored with Academy Honorary Awards.
Academy President Janet Yang praised Curtis as a "brilliant comedic storyteller." Additionally, he embodies the humanitarian principles highlighted by this award.
The Oscar statuette is awarded to individuals whose humanitarian efforts positively impact the industry. Last year, honorary Oscars recognized legends like Angela Bassett and Mel Brooks.
Earlier in the year, "Notting Hill," directed by Roger Michell and written by Curtis, celebrated its 25th anniversary. Starring Julia Roberts and Grant, the film follows the romance between a movie star and a bookstore owner, emphasizing challenges due to fame.
Roberts reflected on her iconic line, "I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her." In a February 2024 issue of British Vogue, she remarked, "It was a great scene. Who knew that would become the line?"
Earlier, SSP wrote that Nicholas Hoult seemed to confirm a marriage to Bryana Holly.
