Hulk Hogan Booed During Debut of WWE’s ‘Raw’ on Netflix
WWE's premiere of Monday Night Raw on Netflix saw mixed receptions. While stars like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, John Cena, and The Undertaker received warm welcomes, Hulk Hogan faced boos from the audience. Approximately 17,000 fans attended the event at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, on January 6.
At 71, Hogan sparked jeers while promoting WWE’s Netflix deal. He discussed his partnership with WWE and his Real American Beer brand. "In the past, I’ve had a whole bunch of partners down the line," he said amid the crowd's disapproval. He mentioned, "But the greatest partner the WWE has ever had is Netflix, the greatest tag team partner of all time," referring to their historic collaboration. Clips of his reception rapidly gained traction on social media.
Responses from viewers varied widely. One user commented on Hogan’s struggle for fan approval, calling it "a beautiful thing." Another highlighted the irony in Hogan’s attempt to promote his beer amidst the boos: "Watching Hulk Hogan get annihilated with boos while trying to sell his ripoff Bud Light beer was incredible."
Once the leading figure in professional wrestling, Hogan has grown controversial among fans in recent years. His WWE contract was terminated in 2015 after a leaked recording revealed him using a racial slur, leading to his suspension from the WWE Hall of Fame. Hogan issued an apology, stating there is "no excuse" for his language. He emphasized the importance of treating all individuals with respect, regardless of differences.
Hogan returned to the WWE Hall of Fame in July 2018. His reinstatement followed various public apologies and efforts to educate youth, enabling learning from his past mistakes. WWE reaffirmed their support for him, acknowledging his induction into the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Alumni Hall of Fame.
Earlier on the Monday of the debut, WWE announced a multi-year agreement to promote Hogan’s beer brand on Raw and various social media channels. This deal includes branding on the ring mat. The debut also showed guest appearances by Nikki Garcia (formerly Nikki Bella) and rapper Travis Scott. Celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens, Richard Gadd, and Tiffany Haddish were spotted in attendance.
