Jay-Z Responds to Allegations of Assault Alongside Sean "Diddy" Combs
Sean "Jay-Z" Carter publicly addressed allegations after being named in a sexual assault lawsuit against Sean "Diddy" Combs. The civil lawsuit accuses Jay-Z of raping a woman when she was just 13 years old.
On December 8, the accuser, known only as "Jane Doe," updated her lawsuit originally filed against Combs in October. In the revised suit, she alleges that in 2000, following the MTV Video Music Awards in New York, both Jay-Z and Combs raped her at a house party.
Jay-Z, whose legal name is Shawn Carter, issued an urgent statement shortly after the lawsuit was refilled. In direct remarks to the lawyer involved, Tony Buzbee, he stated, "These allegations are so heinous that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!" He further stated that anyone committing such a crime against a minor deserves incarceration.
Carter condemned what he described as the "idiotic claims" leveled against him. He claimed that Buzbee had previously reached out to his attorney in an attempt to negotiate a settlement before refiling the suit. "What he calculated," Carter asserted, "was the nature of these allegations and the expected public scrutiny would push me to settle."
In response, Buzbee acknowledged that his firm had contacted Carter's lawyer with a demand letter for an alleged victim. However, he clarified that the accuser had not sought financial compensation, only confidential mediation.
Regarding the allegations in the lawsuit, Buzbee stated, "We will litigate the facts in court, not in the media," allowing the documents to portray their narrative.
Carter emphasized his concern for his own family as a shared father of three with his wife, Beyoncé. He expressed the hardship of explaining the situation to his children, particularly noting, "My husband and I have to sit down with our kids, one of whom is at the right age where, her friends might see the press."
He added, "I mourn yet another loss of innocence. Children should not endure such violence at their young age." He reflected on the necessity of protecting children, drawing from his upbringing in Brooklyn. "We don’t play these types of games. We adhere to strict codes and honor."
This lawsuit represents one of several recent civil abuse allegations against Combs, notable for including an additional defendant. Currently, Combs is in jail awaiting trial for federal charges related to sex trafficking while denying any wrongdoing.
Combs’ attorneys earlier remarked on the sequence of allegations as attempts for publicity, asserting their confidence in Combs’s defense. "In court, the truth will prevail: Mr. Combs has never sexually assaulted anyone — adult or minor," they stated.
