Jean Smart Urges Networks to Donate Awards Show Revenues Amid L.A. Wildfires
Jean Smart has an important request for television networks amid the current fires in Los Angeles.
"Attention! With ALL due respect, during Hollywood’s season of celebration, I hope any of the networks televising the upcoming awards will seriously consider NOT airing them and donating the revenue to the victims of the fires and the brave firefighters," the star of "Hacks" shared on Instagram on December 8th.
Smart’s call comes as several Hollywood events face challenges due to multiple fires surrounding Los Angeles. The Critics Choice Awards, which were set for January 12 and scheduled to air on E!, have been postponed. The Oscars nominations announcement, originally planned for January 17, is now set for January 19, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Oscars ceremony will broadcast on March 2 via ABC.
"This unfolding tragedy has greatly impacted our community. Our prayers are with those battling these devastating fires and everyone affected," said Joey Berlin, CEO of the Critics Choice Awards. The event is now planned to air live on January 26.
Before the fires started on January 7, Smart was celebrated at the Golden Globes on January 5, where she won Best Actress in a Television Series, Comedy, for "Hacks." She secured this award against notable nominees like Selena Gomez from "Only Murders in the Building" and Quinta Brunson from "Abbott Elementary."
The wildfires have already influenced many in Hollywood, intensified by strong Santa Ana winds. By Wednesday night, another fire erupted in the Hollywood Hills, a well-known area for celebrities.
Among those evacuating from the Hollywood Hills was Julianne Hough, host of "Dancing With the Stars." She shared a video on Instagram Stories about the fire near her home.
"OK, so, there is a fire right by my house," Hough stated in the clip recorded at her residence. "We’re with friends, but anyone in Hollywood Hills needs to evacuate immediately. This feels very serious as it's surrounding all of us now. Everybody needs to just go!"
After her initial warning, Hough provided a second update in a car with her dog, Sunny.
"Sunny and I are safe and driving, but I urge everyone to evacuate quickly if you can," she said in her video. "Traffic is going to be an issue. It is crucial to stay safe and pray for the first responders and firefighters. Together, we all need to support one another."
Other notable figures impacted by the L.A. fires include Paris Hilton, Billy Crystal, Spencer Pratt, and Heidi Montag.
