Jennifer Hudson Shares How Her Son Inspired Her Christmas Album

Jennifer Hudson reveals that her 15-year-old son, David Daniel Otunga Jr., played a significant role in her new Christmas album, The Gift of Love. The EGOT winner highlights the collaborative effort alongside her boyfriend Common to create this joyful project.

"He helped name this holiday album, The Gift of Love," Hudson explains. The album was created during holiday preparations with her son, whom she shares with ex-fiancé David Otunga. "He’s a holiday fanatic just like me. He’s been very involved in this whole process," she adds. They spent time watching holiday movies by the fireplace. Hudson recalls, "He even said, ‘Mama, this song is my favorite off the Christmas album,’ giving his two cents. He’s encouraging and helped me learn different notes."

Released in October, The Gift of Love marks Hudson’s first holiday album and her first major release since the Respect soundtrack in 2021. "Everything about it is family-oriented, even the creation process," she emphasizes.

Beyond music, Hudson aims to instill the value of giving during this festive season. "He’s always looking for gifts to give others," she says about her son. "That’s how he was raised. He loves seeing everyone come together to share meals and enjoy unity."

This Christmas, the family tradition continues with a trip to Hudson’s hometown of Chicago. "We call it 'flying in for Christmas,'" she shares.

The collaboration on the album extended to her relationship with Common, with whom she confirmed her romantic links in January 2024. Together, they worked on the track, "Almost Christmas." Hudson describes the creative process, saying, "I started with ‘Twas the night before Christmas,’ and then he freestyled, adding a personal touch." This fusion of styles leads to a beautiful blend of their musical artistry.

Her album coincides with a campaign titled "Love is in the House" by Old Navy. The Gift of Love will be available in select stores at various cities where Hudson tours, including Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and New York City.

"To think I get to go into Old Navy and see my holiday album? That's a Christmas gift in itself for me," Hudson expresses with joy.
